Goals That Bend, Not Break: Thriving Amid Life's Changes

Recently, I had the privilege of sitting down with John Borland on his podcast, where we delved into the world of goals. We discussed my outlook on setting and achieving goals. But, before we dive into my goals, let me take you back to a moment that stirred something within me—a moment i believe gave birth to this journey.

It was during my first-ever job interview, a fresh-faced teenager on the brink of adulthood. The interviewer asked, "What's your greatest achievement?" A simple question, yet it prompted a somewhat embellished answer. In that moment, I claimed to have conquered The Brecon Beacons—a mighty feat I had never actually undertaken. The lie seemed harmless at the time, but it planted a seed. It made me realize that I didn't want to fabricate my achievements; I wanted to create accomplishments I could genuinely be proud of.

Every year, (for atleast the past 6 years) I make it a point to set ten goals that encompass both the serious and the fun aspects of life. Some are driven by a sense of purpose, while others are purely for the sheer pleasure of it. These annual goals serve as a compass for me, guiding me towards a life enriched with purpose and enjoyment, reminding me to savor every moment along the way. But whats equally important is the wisdom I've gained through setbacks and failures—lessons that have shaped my perspective and fueled my growth.

Now, let's journey through the goals that have etched their mark on my transformative path:

Conquering Heights - The Brecon Beacons

Not only has it actually become one of my greatest achievements, it's inspired me to find a love for mountain climbing, having now added more to my yearly goals such as The Yorkshire 3 Peak Challenge, Helvelyn, Snowden and now toying with the idea of the National peaks in 2024! Challenges like this have shaped who i am, who i surround myself with and continue to test both my physical and mental prowess. While my fitness improves i can promise i still contemplate why, as a sane person, I continue putting myself through this strangely tormented idea of fun.

Crafting Success with Determination - Raising £1000 for charity

My sisters and I are no strangers to fundraising, always eager to make a difference. We've organised events and campaigns, all driven by our dedication to the Alzheimer's Society cause, and the impact its had on our family.

We decided to take it a step further by setting a goal that would make much more of a difference - £1000. To do this we signed up to Total Warrior UK, a skydive, and the Brecon Beacons hike (above).

It's not just about raising funds; it's about aligning our intentions with actions. Just as those affected by Alzheimer's show incredible strength, we embrace determination, courage, and compassion. With each challenge, we inspire others to realise their potential for positive change.

Embracing Positivity and Boldness - Travelling Solo

A positive mindset is the foundation for achieving anything I set my heart on. Armed with cliché affirmations of gratitude, positive quotes, and a firm belief of being a strong independent, Destiny's Child "i depend on me" Woman.

In 2022, I mustered the courage to travel solo as a woman. Pushing myself beyond my comfort zone, reinforcing that positivity is a magnet for remarkable experiences. Now the practical aspect of travelling alone actually wasn't the part i was nervous for, i am meticulously organised and thorough. But actually just being alone and for the first time in my life, and having to sit uncomfortably with that.

What's more, my journey has unintentionally ignited a chain reaction, inspiring other women I know to step out of their comfort zones and tell me they’ve embark on their own solo adventures!

Achieving Sky-High Goals

From trying new things (Vegan January) to smashing fitness goals (Completing Total Warrior) or even nailing career landmarks (Top 30 Under 30), I've seen my aspirations grow from mere ideas to tangible triumphs, all by harnessing the power of tiny actions that pack a punch. Now I understand how to break big dreams into tiny tasks. By getting into the habit loop—spotting triggers, satisfying cravings, making a move, and celebrating—it's like I've found a secret passage to success.

"Whats your 10 year plan?"

Which brings me to why i hate this question - in my 26 years of existence i don't think i've ever known the answer and yet i can proudly say i've accomplished a lot. The question i find can be dangerously limiting because it fixates our focus on a singular goal or destination. Life is a dynamic journey, and we, as individuals, are constantly evolving. One of the biggest things i've learned is when it comes to goals & life, it's essential to remain open to new possibilities and adapt our goals as life unfolds, allowing ourselves to explore various paths and embrace the ever-changing nature of our own aspirations and desires.

Punishing oneself for not achieving goals when life presents unexpected challenges is counterproductive and harmful. Life is inherently unpredictable, and setbacks are a natural part of the journey. This year, I was determined to take on the Tough Mudder challenge, but unfortunately, I sprained my ankle along the way; however, I've chosen instead focus on my recovery and future opportunities & just simply adapted my plan to do it next year!

My path for example is not solely about climbing the corporate ladder or chasing after the next job title—it's about finding success in areas that deeply resonate with me. It's about inspiring, and looking back with no regrets, knowing I've poured my heart into every endeavour.

The journey continues, and I can't wait to see where the road takes me—and hopefully where it'll take you too. Cheers to growth, triumphs, and the thrilling journey ahead!

If you're curious, or want some inspiration heres some of my other goals i've set through the years (i'll leave it up to you to guess which i've achieved!)
